Magic Under Pressure
Overview
Magic uses the same core resolution structure as other risky action.
Under pressure, magic is dangerous because casting needs method, energy, attention, and control. A caster may still act quickly in combat, but enemies can interrupt gestures, break speech, disrupt focus objects, damage inscriptions, deny environmental access, or overload concentration.
The TTRPG rules should follow the setting’s existing magic laws: magic does not create free energy, casting has cost, method matters, and failure can produce backlash.
Casting Pace
Use casting pace to decide what kind of exchange the magic needs.
| Casting Pace | Use | Default Handling |
|---|---|---|
|
Immediate combat magic, emergency warding, short bursts, improvised defense. |
Resolve in one exchange, usually with higher pressure and sharper cost. |
|
Effects that need a moment of stance, breath, words, tool use, or target reading. |
Requires position, cover, ally help, or accepting pressure. |
|
Large, stable, long-range, group, sanctified, binding, healing, or site-scale work. |
Usually a scene objective, clock, or defended procedure rather than one roll. |
|
Stored rune, charged focus, prebound phrase, ward key, loaded charm, or readied device. |
Faster and safer if intact, but vulnerable to prior disruption or depletion. |
|
Ongoing ward, binding, illusion, levitation, control, shield, or channel. |
Requires concentration, anchor, focus, condition, or sustained permission. |
Improvised casting favors speed and flexibility. Prepared casting favors safety, scale, and repeatability.
Casting Under Threat
When a player character casts while threatened, use the normal exchange procedure and add magical pressure where relevant.
| Situation | Default Pressure |
|---|---|
Caster is |
Apply pressure unless the spell is prepared, very quick, touch-based, or the caster has suitable Talent support. |
Caster is |
Limit gesture, focus, or tool-based casting until the pressure is answered. |
Caster is under ranged suppression |
Require cover, help, a prepared release, or accept pressure. |
Caster lacks a needed focus, symbol, material, site, or charge |
The spell may be impossible, weakened, or paid for with higher personal cost. |
Caster rushes a careful working |
Increase backlash risk or reduce effect scale. |
Caster is already carrying magical strain |
Apply relevant Conditions and make backlash more severe. |
Do not add pressure simply because the action is magical. Add pressure because the casting method, cost, position, or opposition makes control harder.
Method Vulnerabilities
Casting method determines how a spell can be interrupted.
| Method | Main Vulnerability | TTRPG Use |
|---|---|---|
Direct Will |
Cognitive disruption, panic, overload, induced confusion. |
Fear, shock, psychic pressure, or pain can distort target or scale. |
Gesture |
Restraint, imbalance, wounds, broken stance. |
|
Spoken or Liturgic |
Silence, breath loss, choking, distortion, panic. |
Gagging, vacuum, noise, fear, or broken rhythm can fracture the effect. |
Rune or Inscription |
Smearing, inversion, broken geometry, contamination. |
Damage the surface, alter the sign, break the circle, or corrupt the medium. |
Ritual |
Sequence interruption, role desync, circle breach. |
Treat as a scene objective with defenders, progress, and failure states. |
Focus-Based |
Disarm, fracture, overload, detuning. |
|
Blood or Bodily Medium |
Overdraw, contamination, pain shock, coerced medium. |
Costs can become wounds, lifeforce strain, social fallout, or legal danger. |
Prayer or Devotional |
Vow contradiction, alignment break, liturgical mismatch. |
Social, oath, or sanctified pressure can weaken permission. |
Environmental Conduction |
Source denial, site turbulence, line drift, weather shift. |
Terrain, ley access, atmosphere, ship systems, or local magic become part of the exchange. |
Mixed-Method |
Timing mismatch between channels. |
Powerful, but Costly Success or worse can split the effect or amplify backlash. |
Competent casters often keep fallback methods. A fallback can avoid one vulnerability, but may reduce effect, increase cost, or change the kind of risk.
Maintained Effects
Some effects continue after the first roll.
| Maintained Effect | Default Requirement | Failure Pressure |
|---|---|---|
Personal ward |
Attention, focus, item, phrase, or steady stance. |
Ward flickers, weakens, drains, or blocks the wrong thing. |
Binding |
Clause, symbol, name, oath, focus, or continued authority. |
Target slips, clause rebounds, or the binding affects the wrong subject. |
Illusion or veil |
Concentration, anchor, sight line, trace, or prepared medium. |
Image drifts, false detail exposes itself, or the caster is revealed. |
Channeling |
Stable energy source and safe conduit. |
Overload, drain, environmental harm, or rebound into caster. |
Control effect |
Continued permission, command structure, or contested will. |
Target resists, command reflects, or identity pressure appears. |
Ritual sequence |
Roles, timing, circle, tools, and site integrity. |
Progress stalls, sequence fractures, or the site becomes hazardous. |
A maintained effect can be attacked directly if the opposition can reach its method: break the focus, disrupt speech, damage symbols, sever line of sight, deny the source, or force the caster to choose between movement and control.
Maintained effects should also add pressure while the scene remains dangerous. Each maintained spell, ward, control effect, veil, or channel gives the opposition a concrete thing to strain, interrupt, corrupt, overload, or exploit. If the caster keeps several effects active, increase the chance that Costly Success, Unstable Result, or Trouble creates backlash, lost focus, collateral pressure, or a choice between preserving the effect and advancing the main objective.
Warding and Countermagic
Warding and countermagic answer magical pressure without always canceling the whole spell.
| Defensive Magic | Use |
|---|---|
Ward |
Block, filter, redirect, slow, or define a threshold against a specific force. |
Dispel |
Collapse an existing effect by attacking its structure, source, anchor, or permission. |
Ground |
Bleed off charge, heat, resonance, shock, or unstable force into a safer path. |
Sever |
Cut a link, binding, trace, command, signal, oath-line, or conduit. |
Veil |
Hide target, route, identity, signature, heat, signal, or magical trace. |
Reveal |
Expose hidden magic, false identities, veiled threats, weak points, or active links. |
Nullify |
Suppress a defined effect, tool, permission, signal, spell channel, or local force. |
Countermagic should name what it targets. "I counter the spell" is weaker than "I sever the focus line," "I ground the storm charge," or "I reveal the binding clause."
Backlash and Failure
Use backlash when a magical roll fails, is interrupted, is rushed, or succeeds at an unstable cost.
| Outcome Band | Backlash Guidance |
|---|---|
Breakthrough |
The caster controls the effect and may reduce strain, stabilize a source, or preserve a focus. |
Clean Success |
The spell works without the main stated cost. Minor sensory or cosmetic side effects may still appear. |
Costly Success |
The spell works, but creates strain, resource loss, exposure, collateral pressure, or unstable residue. |
Unstable Result |
The spell partially works, misfires, weakens, or creates a dangerous side effect. |
Trouble |
The spell fails, rebounds, hits the wrong target, damages the caster, contaminates the scene, or escalates the threat. |
For severe failures, use the setting’s failure logic from Costs and Side Effects: identify method channel, school signature, severity band, and containment priority.
Common TTRPG backlash Conditions include Spent, Overstimulated, Sickened, Storm-Marked, Burned, Drained, Contaminated, Disoriented, Oath-Scorched, or Resonance-Burned.
When a magical hazard or ritual is calibrated against equal-tier specialists, assume the hazard can threaten maintained effects directly. This keeps magic useful without letting a prepared caster solve every pressure scene with one stable effect.
Lifeforce Risk
Lifeforce is not a generic mana pool.
Use lifeforce risk when magic draws on vital reserves, healing compatibility, bodily medium, sacrifice, overchanneling, necromancy, vital magic, blood magic, or emergency casting beyond safe limits.
| Lifeforce Risk | Use |
|---|---|
Vital strain |
Apply exhaustion, tremor, weakness, or recovery pressure. |
Pattern mismatch |
Healing or transfer works poorly across incompatible lifeforce signatures. |
Overdraw |
The caster pays for more power than their body can safely provide. |
Predatory extraction |
The working harms another living source and may create moral, legal, or dark-practice consequences. |
Lasting trace |
The caster survives but carries a lingering magical or biological mark. |
Lifeforce costs should usually become Conditions, obligations, reduced recovery, altered permission, or future vulnerability rather than a simple point spend.
Magical Equipment Tags
Magical help decide what a tool can do under pressure.
| Tag | Pressure Use |
|---|---|
|
Powerful or stable, but slower and vulnerable to sequence disruption. |
|
Resists a defined magical pressure, but may need maintenance, authority, or correct boundary. |
|
Improves controlled flow, but can overload or rebound if disrupted. |
|
Strong for the right user, place, oath, school, or lineage; awkward or unsafe for others. |
|
Pays cost from a defined source and creates resource, lifeforce, or ethical pressure. |
|
Suppresses a defined force, but may also block allied magic, signals, senses, or tools. |
|
Strong in resonance-rich contexts, but sensitive to zones, anchors, storms, and metaphysical pressure. |
|
Offers power with increased backlash, misfire, escalation, or containment risk. |
Magical gear should not remove risk for free. Good gear changes the kind of risk: from raw casting danger to maintenance, access, attunement, charge, legality, containment, or enemy counterplay.
Future Use
Later work should define magical Talents, school-specific combat procedures, example spells, casting costs, backlash tables, ward examples, ritual clocks, magical defenses by era, and digital schema examples for spell effects and maintained effects.
The current document is a pressure chassis for magic, not a complete spell list.
