The Surging Deep
Overview
The Surging Deep is the Harmonic realm of Water, Flow, and Life. It is the plane where fluidity is not just a property of matter but the fundamental nature of existence. Unlike the Anchors, where water is a substance, in the Surging Deep, water is the concept of change, adaptation, and continuity. It is the blood of the cosmos, the circulatory system that carries life, energy, and memory throughout the universe.
This Harmonic represents the necessity of movement for life. Without flow, there is stagnation; without adaptation, there is death. It is the primary conduit for biological transfer, the medium through which life spreads, and the counterbalance to The Iron Backbone (Structure/Stability) and The Frozen Moment (Stasis). It is the plane where “what is” becomes “what could be” through transformation.
Environment and Atmosphere
Visuals
- Color Palette: Deep blues, turquoise, emerald green, and silver. Colors shift with the depth and current, ranging from the pale surface to the abyssal dark.
- Lighting: The light is refracted and diffused, creating dancing patterns on surfaces. Bioluminescence is common, with glowing organisms illuminating the depths. There are no sharp shadows, only soft gradients of light and dark.
- Terrain: A landscape of endless oceans, floating islands of kelp, and underwater cities of coral and crystal. There is no solid ground; everything is fluid, shifting, and alive. Rivers flow upward; waterfalls cascade into voids.
- Atmosphere: The air is humid and thick, smelling of salt, ozone, and marine life. It feels like breathing water; every breath is a reminder of the plane’s nature.
Sensory Experience
- Sound: A constant, rhythmic pulse of waves, currents, and the songs of deep creatures. The sound is immersive, surrounding the traveler from all directions. Silence is rare and unsettling.
- Touch: Everything is wet, smooth, and yielding. Water feels like a second skin. Touching a surface feels like touching a living thing; it responds to pressure and movement.
- Smell: Salt, seaweed, and the scent of rain. The air is rich with the smell of life.
- Thought: Thoughts flow like water. Ideas connect and merge. Linear thinking is difficult; the mind moves in currents and eddies.
The Laws of Physics (Local Variations)
The physics of the Surging Deep are governed by Fluid Dynamics and Adaptation:
- The Law of Flow: Nothing is static. All things move, shift, and change. Resistance to flow causes pressure and eventual rupture.
- The Law of Adaptation: Life here adapts instantly to its environment. A traveler’s body will begin to change to suit the conditions (gills, pressure resistance, etc.).
- The Law of Circulation: Energy and matter are constantly recycled. Nothing is wasted; everything is repurposed. Death feeds life.
- The Law of Depth: The deeper one goes, the more pressure and truth one encounters. Surface thoughts are shallow; deep thoughts are profound.
Inhabitants
Life in the Surging Deep is defined by resilience and interconnectedness.
The Tidesingers
- Description: Humanoids with skin like polished sea glass, hair like flowing kelp, and eyes that reflect the ocean’s depths. They communicate through song and vibration.
- Physiology: They do not breathe air; they extract oxygen from water. They can survive in any pressure or temperature. They are immortal as long as the flow continues.
- Culture: Harmonizers and Healers. They view the universe as a single, interconnected system. They value balance, empathy, and the preservation of life.
- Behavior: They are calm and fluid. They speak in melodies and rhythms. They view outsiders as “rigid” or “dry.”
The Current-Bound
-
Description: Entities that are part of the flow itself, taking the form of water, mist, or living currents.
-
Function: They guide the movement of energy and matter through the plane.
-
Examples:
- Wave-Weavers: Entities that shape the currents to create paths or barriers.
- Life-Bearers: Beings that carry the seeds of life to new worlds.
- The Drifters: Travelers who have surrendered to the flow, becoming part of the current.
The Drowned
- Description: Visitors or beings who have been consumed by the plane. They are trapped in the depths, aware but unable to escape.
- Decline Trigger: They become part of the ecosystem, their memories feeding the life of the plane.
Resources and Hazards
Resources
- Healing: The ambient life force can cure almost any injury or disease.
- Adaptation: The ability to adapt to any environment, from extreme heat to crushing pressure.
- Memory of Water: Access to the collective memory of all life that has ever existed.
Hazards
- The Drown: The primary danger. A traveler may become so immersed in the flow that they lose their sense of self and become part of the current.
- The Pressure: The deeper one goes, the more the pressure compresses the body and mind. Too much depth can crush a traveler.
- The Current: Being swept away by a powerful current can strand a traveler in a distant part of the plane.
- The Stagnation: Paradoxically, resisting the flow can cause stagnation, leading to decay and death.
Connection to the Veil and Other Planes
-
The Veil: The Veil in the Surging Deep is a network of currents and channels. Traveling through it feels like swimming. Memory erosion is replaced by “dilution”; you may forget who you are as you merge with the flow.
-
Connections:
- The Material Plane: Accessible via “Water-Gates” (oceans, rivers, wells, places of baptism).
- The Verdant Expanse: A neighboring Surplus Plane. The Deep provides the water; the Expanse provides the growth. Portals here accelerate life or cause flooding.
- The Parched: A neighboring Deficit Plane. The Parched is the absence of water; the Deep is the abundance. Portals here can restore hydration but risk drowning.
- The Iron Backbone: The opposing Harmonic. The Backbone resists the Deep; the Deep erodes the Backbone. Portals here create zones of constant erosion and rebuilding.
Role in the Cosmology
The Surging Deep serves as the circulatory system of the universe.
- It represents the necessity of movement for life. Without flow, the universe would stagnate and die.
- It is a counterbalance to The Iron Backbone (Structure). Where the Backbone holds, the Deep moves.
- The Primes (specifically Aqua Prime) view it as the great conduit of life and renewal. It ensures that the universe remains alive and adaptable.
Travel Notes for Mortals
- Preparation: Bring waterproof gear. Do not bring items that can be damaged by water. Prepare to adapt.
- Magic Warning: Water magic is amplified but dangerous. It can drown the caster. Fire magic is ineffective and may cause steam explosions. Healing magic is powerful but may alter the recipient.
- Survival Strategy: Go with the flow. Do not resist the current. Adapt to the environment. Do not linger too long. Remember your purpose.
- Goal: Most travelers come to the Surging Deep to seek healing, recover lost memories, or find a new path. Few return without a new understanding of change.
