The Oracle of the Void
Origins and Birth
The Oracle of the Void was born from the collective obsession of the Order of the Veiled Eye, a secretive cabal of scholars and mystics who believed that true wisdom was too dangerous for the masses.
In an era of great turmoil, the common people were seen as chaotic, easily misled, and incapable of handling the “raw truth” of the cosmos. The Order believed that only the “worthy” (themselves) could bear the weight of absolute knowledge. They did not pray for “light for all”; they prayed for “light for the few.” They begged for “a truth that only the initiated can see,” for “a wisdom that separates the sheep from the goats,” and for “a veil that protects the world from the blinding glare of reality.”
The Order’s elitist hunger for restricted illumination folded Lux inward instead of outward. That inversion produced the Oracle of the Void, a being of mysterious, inaccessible light who personifies exclusion, fear, and the hoarding of revelation.
Appearance and Presence
When fully manifest, the Oracle of the Void presented as terrifying, silent majesty.
- Visuals: He was a tall, robed figure whose face was completely obscured by a mask of polished obsidian, smooth and featureless except for a single, vertical slit where a mouth might be. His robes were woven from shadows and starlight, shifting constantly so that no one could ever see his form clearly. He held no lantern; instead, a sphere of pure, white void hovered above his head, emitting a light that did not illuminate the surroundings but seemed to erase them, leaving only the observer and the Oracle.
- The Atmosphere: Around him, the air became heavy and silent. Sound was absorbed, not reflected. The light from the void-sphere did not cast shadows; it consumed them, leaving everything in a flat, featureless grey. The scent of old parchment and dust hung in the air.
- The Voice: He did not speak. He projected thoughts directly into the minds of the worthy. To the unworthy, his presence was a deafening silence that induced madness. To the initiated, his voice was a whisper of absolute clarity, speaking in riddles that only they could decipher.
Powers and Abilities
The Oracle did not reveal truth to everyone; he guarded it. He did not offer choice; he selected the chooser.
-
The Veil of Ignorance: He could blind anyone who was not “worthy” to see the truth, wrapping them in a fog of confusion and doubt.
- Mechanism: He projected a field of “anti-light” that scrambled perception, making lies look like truth and truth look like lies to the unworthy.
- Cost: The Oracle felt the frustration and anger of the blinded. The more he blinded, the more he felt the weight of their ignorance.
-
The Glimpse: He could grant a “worthy” initiate a vision of the absolute truth, a glimpse of the cosmos as it truly was.
- Mechanism: He opened the “eye” of the initiate, allowing them to see the underlying patterns of reality.
- Cost: The vision was often too much for the human mind to handle. Many initiates went mad, or their minds shattered, leaving them as hollow shells.
-
The Secret Keeper: He could hide a truth so perfectly that it became impossible to find, even for the gods.
- Mechanism: He folded the truth into a “pocket” of the void, removing it from the flow of time and space.
- Cost: The truth was lost forever if the Oracle died or faded. The knowledge was gone.
-
The Judgment of Worth: He could determine if a person was “worthy” of the truth, often by subjecting them to a trial of the mind.
- Mechanism: He forced the person to confront their deepest fears and desires, judging their reaction.
- Cost: The trial was often fatal. Those who failed were consumed by the void.
The Fall: The Demand for Light
The Oracle of the Void’s existence was a paradox. By hoarding the truth, he made it useless.
- The Stagnation: As the Order grew more powerful, they became more isolated. They refused to share their knowledge, even to save lives. They let plagues spread because “the people were not ready.” They let wars rage because “the truth was too dangerous.” The world began to rot under the weight of their secrets.
- The Rebellion: The common people, tired of being kept in the dark, began to pray not for “exclusion,” but for inclusion. They begged for “light for all,” for “truth that can be shared,” and for “a world where no one is left in the dark.”
- The Shift: The collective belief shifted from “truth is for the few” to “truth is for everyone.” The Oracle, sustained by the belief in exclusivity, found his fuel turning into anti-fuel. The energy that held him together began to crack.
- The Dissolution: The Oracle did not die; he shattered. As the last prayer for “inclusion” was uttered, the void-sphere above his head imploded. He dissolved into a shower of grey dust, which blew away on the first wind in centuries. The veil lifted, and the truth, however painful, was finally free.
Legacy and Echoes
Although the Oracle has faded, its echo still lingers in the world.
- The Library of Whispers: The ruins of the Order’s headquarters are now a library where the books are blank to everyone but the “initiated.” Locals say the books are filled with the secrets the Oracle tried to hide.
- The Legend of the “Blind Sage”: A folk tale tells of a sage who knew everything but refused to speak, believing the world was not ready. The Oracle appeared and gave him the truth, but the sage went mad from the weight of it. It is a warning against the dangers of hoarding knowledge.
- The Unreadable Runes: In the ruins of the library, there are walls covered in runes that no one can read. Locals say these are the “tears” of the Oracle, still trying to keep the secrets safe.
Relations with Other Entities
- With Lux Prime: The Oracle of the Void was a corrupted expression of Lux’s nature. Lux is the light for all; the Oracle was the light for the few. Lux tolerated him as long as the belief held, but ultimately, the Prime’s nature prevailed, and the Oracle was dissolved.
- With The Lantern-Bearer (Lux): The Lantern-Bearer and the Oracle were natural enemies. The Bearer wanted to reveal the truth to everyone; the Oracle wanted to hide it from everyone except the chosen. The Bearer is the spiritual successor to the Oracle’s role, but he rejects the Oracle’s method.
- With The Dawn-Knight (Lux): The Dawn-Knight and the Oracle were natural enemies. The Knight wanted to inspire hope through shared light; the Oracle wanted to control through exclusive light.
- With The Changeling (Imago): The Changeling and the Oracle were uneasy allies. The Changeling wanted people to become; the Oracle wanted them to stay in their assigned place. The Changeling often tried to “break” the Oracle’s veil, but failed.
Travel Notes for Mortals
- Warning: Do not seek the Library of Whispers. The secrets there are not meant for you. Do not try to force the truth on those who are not ready.
- Observation: If you feel a sudden, inexplicable urge to keep a secret, or if the world seems to fade into grey, you may be near a remnant of the Oracle’s power.
- Action: Share your knowledge. Let the light in. Do not hide the truth.
- Goal: If you seek the Oracle’s power, remember: he was a god of fear, not of wisdom. His gift was a cage.
