Aion Prime, The Eternal Now
Overview
Aion Prime is the embodiment of Time itself in its raw, unfiltered state. While other Primes govern matter, energy, or concepts, Aion governs the dimension in which all change occurs. Aion is not “time” as a clock measures it (seconds, minutes, years); Aion is the river of becoming. It is the force that allows a seed to become a tree, a thought to become a memory, and a star to ignite and die.
Aion is often misunderstood as the “keeper of the past” or the “architect of the future.” In truth, Aion is the Eternal Now—the singular, moving point where the past dissolves and the future is born. Aion does not dwell in the past (which is memory) or the future (which is potential); Aion is the act of moving from one to the other.
Without Aion, the universe would be a static snapshot: a frozen moment where nothing changes, nothing ages, and nothing happens. Aion is the engine of existence.
Appearance and Manifestation
Aion has no fixed form, as form implies a static state, which contradicts the nature of time. However, when Aion chooses to manifest to mortals or Primes, it appears as:
The Chronos-Weaver
- Visuals: A towering, androgynous figure draped in robes that seem to be made of shifting moments. One moment the fabric is the vibrant green of spring; the next, the grey of winter; the next, the charred black of a burnt forest. The figure’s face is a blur, constantly shifting between youth, adulthood, and old age, never settling.
- The Hourglass Halo: Above Aion’s head floats a massive, translucent hourglass. The sand inside does not fall; it swirls in a chaotic, beautiful vortex, sometimes flowing up, sometimes down, sometimes sideways, representing the non-linear nature of deep time.
- The Voice: Aion’s voice sounds like many voices speaking at once—a child’s giggle, a lover’s whisper, an elder’s cough, a king’s decree—all layered into a single, resonant hum that vibrates in the chest.
The Temporal Distortion
When Aion is near, the environment reacts:
- Time Dilation: A flower might bloom and wither in seconds. A cup of coffee might cool instantly, then heat up again.
- Echoes: Ghostly images of the immediate past or probable future flicker at the edge of vision.
- The Tick: A deep, rhythmic sound, like a giant heartbeat, pulses through the air. It is the sound of the universe ticking forward.
Nature and Philosophy
The Philosophy of the Flow
Aion operates on the principle that change is the only constant.
- The Necessity of Loss: Aion understands that for something new to exist, something old must pass. Aion does not mourn the death of a star; Aion sees it as a necessary step in the cycle of energy.
- The Sanctity of the Moment: Every moment is unique and irreplaceable. Aion cherishes the “Now” above all else. The past is a memory; the future is a dream; only the Now is real.
- The Rejection of False Stasis: Aion governs duration, sequence, and even legitimate preservation, but opposes any attempt to sever stasis from the flow of consequence. This includes abuses of the Frozen Moment that try to make change impossible, and the Cast-Outs like the Bone Singer (who freezes life) or the Ashen Child (who refuses to let things end).
The Relationship with Mortals
Aion is indifferent to individual suffering but deeply invested in the narrative arc of existence.
- Aion does not grant wishes to “live forever” (which would be a curse of stasis).
- Aion does not grant wishes to “go back and change the past” (which would unravel the continuum).
- Aion rewards those who live fully in the Now, who accept the flow of life, and who understand that their mortality gives their actions meaning.
Powers and Abilities
The Flow of Ages
Aion can accelerate, decelerate, or reverse the flow of time within a localized area.
- Acceleration: Can age a weapon to rust in seconds, or a wound to heal instantly.
- Deceleration: Can slow a falling stone to a crawl, or a dying breath to a century-long sigh.
- Reversal: Can rewind a specific event (e.g., a shattered vase reassembling), but only if the cost is paid in “future time” (the user ages rapidly).
The Sight of the Continuum
Aion can see the thread of time for any being or object. It can see where they came from, where they are going, and the branching possibilities of their future.
- Warning: Looking directly at Aion’s sight can drive mortals mad, as they see their own death and the deaths of everyone they love simultaneously.
The Anchor of the Now
Aion can freeze a moment in absolute stasis, creating a pocket of time where nothing changes. This is not a weapon, but a sanctuary or a prison.
- Usage: Used to contain dangerous entities (like the Time Lock) or to preserve a perfect moment (like a memory).
The River of Possibility
Aion can open temporal rifts, allowing travel to the past or future. However, this is dangerous and strictly regulated. Changing the past creates paradoxes that can tear the fabric of reality. Aion usually seals these rifts immediately after use.
Relationships with Other Primes
- Ignis Prime (Energy/Change): Close allies. Ignis provides the energy for change; Aion provides the duration for that change to occur. Together, they drive the evolution of the universe.
- Terra Prime (Structure/Stability): Natural tension. Terra wants things to last; Aion wants things to change. They balance each other: Terra provides the stage, Aion provides the play.
- Umbra Prime (Memory/Death): Deep kinship. Umbra preserves the past; Aion moves the present into the past. They are the two sides of the same coin.
- Lux Prime (Possibility/Future): Partners. Lux generates the future; Aion delivers it.
- Verba Prime (Language/Order): Collaborators. Verba names the moments; Aion orders them.
Relationships with Dark Entities
The Cast-Outs
- The Bone Singer: Aion’s greatest rival. The Bone Singer seeks to freeze time in stone, creating a static, unchanging world. Aion views this as a death of the universe.
- The Ashen Child: Aion’s tragic adversary. The Ashen Child refuses to let things end, trying to keep fires burning forever. Aion knows that without the end, there is no renewal.
- The Great Slumber: A direct threat. The Slumber seeks to stop all motion and will, effectively halting time. Aion fights to keep the river flowing.
- The Silent Tide: Seeks to remove the cycle of return, leaving only a linear pull. Aion defends the rhythm of ebb and flow.
The Beyonders
- Krystallis: Seeks to freeze the universe in a perfect crystal lattice. Aion sees this as the ultimate stasis and opposes it fiercely.
- Mnemosyne Null: Seeks to erase memory (the past). Aion knows that without the past, the present has no context.
- Qzoth: Seeks uncontrolled mutation. Aion tolerates mutation as part of change, but Qzoth’s chaos threatens the continuity of time itself.
The Unformed
- The Echoing Dark: Seeks to un-name time, making “before” and “after” meaningless. Aion fights to keep the sequence intact.
- The Fractured Mirror: Seeks to shatter the singular timeline into infinite contradictions. Aion works to maintain the coherence of the flow.
- The Silent Tide: (See above).
Role in the Cosmology
Aion Prime serves as the clockwork of the universe.
- The Measure of Existence: Without Aion, there is no “duration.” Events would happen all at once, or not at all.
- The Guardian of Causality: Aion ensures that cause precedes effect. Without Aion, the universe would be a chaotic jumble of unrelated events.
- The Harbinger of Change: Aion reminds all beings that nothing lasts forever. This is not a cruel truth, but a liberating one. It gives life urgency, meaning, and beauty.
Worship and Rituals
Aion is rarely worshipped in the traditional sense, as Aion is not a god of mercy or wrath. Instead, Aion is honored through:
- The Ritual of the Passing: Ceremonies that mark the end of things (funerals, harvests, the closing of a chapter). These rituals acknowledge the necessity of loss.
- The Hourglass Offering: Leaving an hourglass in a sacred place, letting the sand run out, and then flipping it to start again. This symbolizes the cycle of life and death.
- The Moment of Silence: Taking a moment to simply be in the Now, acknowledging the flow of time without trying to control it.
Weaknesses and Vulnerabilities
Aion is not invincible.
- Stasis: Aion is weakened by absolute stasis. If the universe were to freeze completely (as Krystallis or the Bone Singer desire), Aion would have no flow to govern and would fade.
- Paradox: If a paradox is created (e.g., killing one’s own grandfather), Aion’s power is strained. The universe tries to “heal” the paradox, often with catastrophic results.
- The Unformed: The Unformed represent the state before time. If they succeed in dissolving the concept of “before” and “after,” Aion loses its domain.
Travel Notes for Mortals
- Warning: Do not attempt to travel through time without Aion’s blessing. The consequences are unpredictable and often fatal.
- Observation: If you feel time slowing down or speeding up, you are near Aion’s influence.
- Action: Respect the flow. Do not try to hold onto the past or rush to the future. Live in the Now.
- Goal: Seek Aion’s wisdom when facing a difficult choice. Aion can show you the consequences of your actions, but the choice remains yours.
