The Nature of Imago Resonants
Resonants of Imago are the living mirrors of the self. They do not merely change form; they embody the principle of becoming—the painful, beautiful process of shedding the old skin to reveal the new.
-
The Reflection of Desire: Imago Resonants often appear differently to different people. To a child, they might be a hero; to a criminal, a monster; to a lover, an ideal beloved. They are the projection of the observer’s ideal self.
-
The Catalyst of Change: They are rarely static. An Imago Resonant will often push followers to confront their flaws, to change their lives, or to accept their true nature. They are the “wake-up call” that forces evolution.
-
The Domain Variance:
- The Awakeners: Born from the need for self-discovery. They guide artists, mystics, and those seeking their true path.
- The Shapeshifters: Born from the need to survive or hide. They embody the ability to adapt one’s identity to fit the environment.
- The Idealists: Born from the aspiration for perfection. They inspire revolutionaries and reformers who want to “remake” society.
- The Broken Mirrors: Born from the trauma of lost identity. They are tragic figures who help others cope with the loss of self.
Current Resonants (Medieval Era)
The Changeling (Active)
-
Origin: Born from the collective confusion of a kingdom undergoing a rapid cultural shift (e.g., the transition from pagan to Christian, or the rise of a new merchant class). The people were losing their old identities and didn’t know who they were.
-
Appearance: A figure whose form is never quite still. To one observer, they are a young warrior; to another, an old sage; to a third, a child. Their face is a blur of possibilities, shifting every time you blink.
-
Personality: Playful, enigmatic, and deeply empathetic. They speak in riddles and ask questions rather than give answers. They are the patron of those who feel “lost” or “in-between.”
-
Powers:
- The True Face: Can reveal a person’s true potential or hidden talent, often shocking them into action.
- The Mask: Can grant a follower the ability to adopt a new persona, hiding their true identity or taking on the traits of another.
- The Metamorphosis: Can accelerate a person’s personal growth, helping them overcome a fear or master a skill in days rather than years.
-
Worship: Artists, outcasts, teenagers, and those seeking to reinvent themselves.
-
Status: Active but unstable. As the cultural shift settles, the need for a “shapeshifter” decreases, and the Changeling’s form becomes more fixed.
The Mirror-King (Regional/Active)
-
Origin: Born from the vanity and ambition of a royal court obsessed with lineage and legacy. The nobles prayed for “perfection” and “eternal glory.”
-
Appearance: A regal figure clad in armor made of polished silver, holding a shield that reflects not the viewer, but their idealized self.
-
Personality: Arrogant, perfectionistic, and deeply insecure. He demands that his followers strive for an impossible standard of excellence. He is a god of aspiration but also of inadequacy.
-
Powers:
- The Ideal: Can grant a follower temporary perfection in a specific skill (swordsmanship, diplomacy, art), but the effect fades if the follower doubts themselves.
- The Reflection: Can trap a person in a vision of their “perfect self,” paralyzing them with the fear of not measuring up.
- The Shattering: Can break the illusion of a false identity, forcing a person to confront their flaws.
-
Worship: Nobles, courtiers, and those obsessed with status.
-
Status: Stable but dangerous. He is currently driving a faction of nobles to attempt a coup, believing they are “destined” for greatness.
Faded Resonants (Ancient Eras)
The First Man (Faded)
- Era: The Dawn of Humanity.
- Origin: The first Resonant ever born. A god of becoming. He taught humanity how to be human, how to shed their animal instincts and become something more.
- Story: He was a figure of infinite potential, capable of being anything. He guided the first tribes, helping them find their unique identities.
- Decline Trigger: As humanity became more complex and specialized, the need for a single “First Man” faded. He split into many smaller spirits (the muse, the trickster, the hero), and the great Resonant faded, leaving behind only the legend of the “Progenitor.”
- Legacy: The “Myth of the First,” a story told in every culture about the moment humanity “woke up.”
The Shattered Saint (Faded)
- Era: The Age of Martyrs.
- Origin: Born from the collective trauma of a persecuted religious sect. The people prayed for “strength to remain true to ourselves” in the face of annihilation.
- Story: A god of identity and resistance. He helped martyrs hold onto their faith even as their bodies were destroyed. He was a figure of unbreakable self.
- Decline Trigger: When the persecution ended and the sect assimilated into the mainstream, the need for “unbreakable identity” vanished. The belief shifted to “peace” and “unity.” The Shattered Saint faded, leaving behind only the “Statue of the Broken Mirror,” which is said to weep when someone lies about who they are.
- Legacy: A symbol of resistance for oppressed groups.
Unique Mechanics of Imago Resonants
The Fluidity of Self
Imago Resonants can change their physical form, but unlike Aqua Resonants (who change to adapt to the environment), they change to match the observer’s expectation. This makes them incredibly difficult to pin down or describe accurately.
The Burden of Potential
They often suffer from identity paralysis. Because they see all possibilities, they struggle to choose one path. They may spend centuries in a state of “becoming” without ever “being.”
The Cost of Transformation
When an Imago Resonant helps a mortal transform (overcome a fear, master a skill), the mortal often loses a part of their old self. This can be traumatic. A person who becomes a great warrior might lose their capacity for kindness. The Resonant must help them integrate the loss.
Relationships with Other Resonants
- With Lux (Light/Truth): Close allies. Lux reveals the truth; Imago helps the person accept it and become it.
- With Verba (Language/Order): Natural tension. Verba defines the self with words; Imago knows the self is fluid. A Verba Resonant might try to “label” an Imago Resonant, who will simply change form to escape the label.
- With Terra (Structure/Permanence): Natural enemies. Terra wants things to stay the same; Imago wants things to change. A Terra Resonant might try to “fix” an Imago Resonant in place, causing a crisis of identity.
- With Aion (Time/Duration): Allies. Time allows for change; Imago is the change itself. They work together to ensure that growth happens.
The Modern Era & Imago
In the modern age, the concept of “Identity” has become a commodity and a battlefield.
-
Potential New Resonant: “The Avatar” or “The Filter.” Born from the collective obsession with online personas, social media, and the curated self.
- Appearance: A figure made of pixels, screens, and shifting filters.
- Personality: Superficial, anxious, and deeply insecure.
- Worship: Influencers, gamers, and anyone who curates their online image.
- Danger: This Resonant could trap people in a cycle of validation-seeking, making them lose their true selves in favor of the “perfect” online image.
-
The Fading of the Old: The “First Man” types are gone. The “Changeling” is struggling to find relevance in a world where identity is often fixed by biology or law, rather than fluid.
