The First Heartwell Claims
Overview
This document records the earliest competing Dark Elf and Dwarven claims around The Rootstone Heartwell.
Rough date range: c. 322,000-c. 316,000 BR.
It focuses on the stage after the post-catastrophe consolidations treated more directly in The Founding of the Gloamroot Covenant and The Founding of the Stonewake Compact, but before the fuller conflict field treated more directly in The Heartwell Struggles, when the Heartwell first becomes impossible for either side to treat as merely local ground.
A Site That Cannot Stay Neutral
The first Heartwell claims begin when the deep world is already politically harder than before, but not yet fully organized around open struggle at the site itself.
The Rootstone Heartwell matters because it survives the wider Roothollow catastrophe as more than one thing at once: a water source, a route node, a structural anchor, and a surviving root-stone remnant tied to older underworld continuity. That layered identity means it cannot remain neutral for long. As soon as neighboring powers become durable enough to think beyond immediate survival, the site begins to draw their attention as something too important to leave undefined.
This is why the first claims arise before the later famous conflict does. The Heartwell is already politically consequential the moment survival memory and infrastructural custody begin hardening into rival orders below.
Claim Before War
What makes this early phase distinct is that competing legitimacy arrives before the conflict fully crystallizes into inherited struggle.
For the emerging Gloamroot Covenant, the Heartwell begins to matter as surviving proof that the deep Elven branch still has sacred and historical claim below. For the emerging Stonewake Compact, the same site begins to matter as a necessary point of water security, route integrity, and defensible deep order. Neither side is merely inventing a pretext. Each is discovering that the same indispensable place answers a different definition of rightful survival.
More specifically, the site gathers the two most painful deep legal memories into one dispute. On the Gloamroot side, Heartwell claim is entangled with refuge obligation and the accusation that lawful shelter or lawful transfer was betrayed in the catastrophe. On the Stonewake side, Heartwell claim is entangled with sealing authority and the counter-claim that closure, route order, and reservoir protection were necessary to prevent wider failure. The first Heartwell claims therefore arise not only from need, but from incompatible inherited legal-moral vocabularies.
That is what gives the first Heartwell claims their historical weight. They are not yet the full struggle, but they establish the terms on which the struggle will later be fought. The site becomes legible as a problem that neither side can ignore, yield, or describe in the other’s preferred language.
This is also why later open conflict feels structurally inevitable rather than accidental. Once the Heartwell becomes a place where survival memory and custodial necessity both claim primacy, repeated friction becomes much easier to inherit than to resolve.
Historical Significance
The first Heartwell claims matter because they give the deep branch its missing transition between post-catastrophe state formation and the later iconic site conflict.
They explain why The Heartwell Struggles do not begin as a sudden outbreak around one famous place. Before there is hardened dispute, there is claim. Before there is inherited grievance, there is the first recognition that one surviving site has become too symbolically and materially dense to remain outside politics.
This also makes the Heartwell claims one of the clearest places in the setting where a site becomes historical infrastructure before it becomes a battlefield. The Heartwell first gathers meanings, duties, and rival necessities, and only then does it gather open struggle around itself.
