- Root Harmonic: The Frozen Moment
- Dominant Prime Energies: Aion, often supported by Terra, Memoria, and Umbra
- Focus: stasis, slowing, preservation, arrested change, time-weighted endurance
Compound Schools
The following schools are important enough in practice to be treated as distinct disciplines, but they are not best understood as belonging to one Harmonic alone.
Vital Magic
- Prime Blend: Aqua + Imago + Memoria
- Focus: biological repair, tissue restoration, living pattern correction, advanced healing
Storm Magic
- Prime Blend: Ignis + Zephyr + Aqua
- Focus: lightning, violent weather, charged atmospheres, destructive sky-work
Nature Magic
- Prime Blend: Aqua + Terra + Imago
- Focus: plants, fertility, adaptive growth, ecosystems, organic shaping
Lightweaving
- Prime Blend: Lux + Imago + Verba
- Focus: crafted illusion, controlled appearance, symbolic projection, perceptual architecture
Warding
- Prime Blend: Terra + Verba + Lux
- Focus: defensive thresholds, conditional protections, sanctified boundaries, durable protections
Blood Magic
- Prime Blend: Aqua + Imago + Aion
- Focus: lineage, vitality transfer, inherited compatibility, biologically costly workings
Forge Magic
- Prime Blend: Ignis + Terra + Verba
- Focus: refinement, shaping of artifacts, enduring enchantment, imposed structural purpose
Necromancy
- Prime Blend: Umbra + Memoria + Aion, often supported by Aqua
- Focus: postmortem traces, corpse-work, funerary preservation, grave labor, remnant speech, and the management of death without soul metaphysics
Conjuration
- Prime Blend: Verba + Zephyr + Imago, often supported by Terra or Lux
- Focus: calling, assembly, temporary manifestation, relocation, and sustained constructs
Augury Magic
- Prime Blend: Lux + Aion + Memoria, often supported by Umbra or Verba

Dominion Magic
- Prime Blend: Verba + Imago + Lux, often supported by Umbra or Aqua
- Focus: command, enthrallment, morale seizure, imposed obedience, and the shaping of will
Sacrificial Magic
- Prime Blend: Aqua + Imago + Verba + Ignis, often supported by Aion
- Focus: converting blood, pain, lifespan, offerings, or sworn loss into immediate magical output
Frost Magic
- Prime Blend: Aqua + Terra + Aion, often supported by Umbra
- Focus: cold, ice, freezing, glacial shaping, arrested motion, and brittle destruction
Morphic Magic
- Prime Blend: Imago + Aqua + Terra, often supported by Memoria or Verba

- Focus: blessings, consecration, radiant protection, martial liturgy, restorative invocation, and anti-corruption rites
Species Difficulty and Access Patterns
School difficulty is not universal. It varies by species lifeforce profile, training approach, and environmental support.
Institutions commonly map school accessibility for each species using four bands:
- Band A (Intuitive): high baseline compatibility; early training succeeds reliably.
- Band B (Workable): moderate compatibility; routine training produces competent practitioners.
- Band C (Demanding): persistent efficiency and safety penalties; advanced supervision required.
- Band D (Severe): structurally high risk; only exceptional cases succeed without major harm.
These are access bands, not social rank. A species can be Band D in one school and Band A in another.
As a broad canon tendency:
- schools rooted in Aqua/Imago/Memoria are often easier for lifeforce patterns optimized for adaptation and recovery,
- schools rooted in Terra/Verba are often easier for high-retention and high-structure profiles,
- high-volatility schools (Storm, Sacrificial, some Dominion branches) are frequently harder across most species unless specialized tolerances are present.
Failure Signatures Across Schools
Schools are also used as diagnostic categories in the canonical failure-mode matrix in Costs and Side Effects.
Method channel explains how a cast broke. School signature explains what that break becomes in the world. The same gesture failure in Crucible and Dream does not produce the same hazard profile.
For adjudication consistency:
- method channel failure is logged first,
- school signature is logged second,
- severity band is assigned after both,
- and containment protocol follows that combined profile.
This keeps source-first taxonomy useful not only for training, but also for post-incident analysis.
Why Schools Exist
Schools exist because most practitioners require a usable framework.
Pure metaphysical theory is too abstract for everyday training. Schools gather recurring patterns of practice into recognizable disciplines. They reflect:
- recurring Harmonic access patterns,
- favored methods,
- and the practical reality that certain Prime blends recur often enough to deserve names of their own.
Schools should therefore not be divided into “real” and “forbidden” magic at the taxonomic level.

Working Rule for Future Expansion
A magical school should be treated as legitimate when it can answer four questions:
- what Harmonic or Prime blend it is rooted in,
- which Prime energy is dominant,
- what sort of transformation it performs most reliably,
- and why practitioners treat it as distinct from adjacent disciplines.
