The Scourge
Overview
The Scourge is a realm where safety is a myth and violence is the only language. It is a plane defined by the absolute absence of security, trust, or peace. In this world, every moment is a potential death sentence, and every interaction is a calculation of threat versus reward.
Unlike the Parched (where the struggle is for sustenance) or the Frost-Bound (where the struggle is for warmth), the Scourge is defined by the struggle for survival against constant predation. It is a world of perpetual war, where the strong eat the weak, and the only law is the law of the fittest.
Environment and Atmosphere
Visuals
- Color Palette: Crimson, rust, charcoal, and bruised purple. The sky is often choked with smoke or stained by the blood of countless battles.
- Lighting: The light is harsh and unforgiving, casting deep, jagged shadows. There are no soft glows; light here is either blinding or non-existent.
- Terrain: Jagged, broken landscapes. Mountains are sharp as knives, valleys are filled with the debris of ancient wars, and forests are twisted, thorny thickets designed to impale. Rivers run red with silt and blood.
- Atmosphere: The air is thick with the smell of iron (blood), ozone (lightning), and rot. The ground is littered with bones, broken weapons, and the remnants of failed settlements.
Sensory Experience
- Sound: Constant noise. The clash of steel, the roar of beasts, the screams of the dying, and the howling of wind through broken structures. Silence is rare and usually indicates a trap.
- Touch: Everything is sharp, rough, or hot. The ground is uneven and treacherous. The air feels heavy with tension, as if the atmosphere itself is bracing for impact.
- Smell: Metallic, acrid, and pungent. The scent of fresh blood is common, mixed with the smell of burning flesh and charred wood.
The Laws of Physics (Local Variations)
The physics of the Scourge are governed by Aggressive Entropy:
- Kinetic Amplification: Force is amplified. A punch hits harder, a fall breaks more bones, and a weapon strike cuts deeper. Momentum is harder to stop once gained.
- Structural Instability: Buildings, bridges, and fortifications are inherently unstable. They collapse under stress or are easily destroyed. Permanent structures are rare; most dwellings are temporary or mobile.
- Predatory Magnetism: Living creatures are drawn to conflict. The presence of violence attracts predators, both natural and supernatural. Peaceful gatherings are impossible; the very air seems to incite aggression.
- Rapid Degradation: Armor, weapons, and tools wear out quickly. Metal rusts in days, leather cracks in hours, and wood splinters under stress. Maintenance is a constant, desperate struggle.
Inhabitants
Life in the Scourge is a constant battle. Inhabitants are shaped by the need to be the predator, not the prey.
The Scourge-Born
- Description: Muscular, scarred humanoids with thick skin and sharp features. Their eyes are often heterochromatic or glowing, adapted to spotting movement in the chaos. They wear armor made from the hides of beasts or scavenged metal.
- Physiology: They have high adrenaline levels and rapid healing factors (to recover from the constant injuries). They feel little pain compared to mortals, as pain is a distraction they cannot afford.
- Culture: Militaristic and Hierarchical. Society is built on strength. Leaders are those who can defeat all challengers. Trust is non-existent; alliances are temporary and based solely on mutual benefit. Betrayal is common and expected.
- Behavior: They are aggressive, paranoid, and hyper-vigilant. They view outsiders as threats to be eliminated or resources to be exploited. They have no concept of mercy; killing a wounded enemy is considered wise, not cruel.
Apex Predators
-
Description: Creatures evolved to dominate the food chain.
-
Examples:
- Blood-Hounds: Pack hunters with enhanced senses and razor-sharp claws. They hunt in coordinated groups.
- Iron-Claws: Massive, armored beasts that can crush stone with their jaws. They are solitary and territorial.
- Shadow-Stalkers: Invisible predators that strike from the darkness, feeding on fear and blood.
Resources and Hazards
Resources
- Weapons and Armor: High-quality, durable gear is the most valuable commodity. A single undamaged sword can buy a kingdom.
- Safe Zones: Rare pockets of relative safety (often guarded by powerful warlords) are highly sought after.
- Battlefield Loot: The aftermath of conflicts yields rare materials, enchanted items, and knowledge.
Hazards
- Constant Warfare: Violence is ubiquitous. Even a simple journey can turn into a battle royale.
- Betrayal: Trust is a liability. Allies can turn on you at any moment for a better offer.
- Environmental Traps: The landscape itself is hostile. Quicksand pits, collapsing cliffs, and ambush points are everywhere.
- The Rage: Prolonged exposure to the Scourge induces a psychological state known as “The Blood-Fury.” Victims become uncontrollable berserkers, attacking friend and foe alike until they collapse from exhaustion.
Connection to the Veil and Other Planes
-
The Veil: The Veil in the Scourge is turbulent and violent. Traveling through it feels like being caught in a storm of blades. Memory erosion manifests as “forgetting who to trust,” leading to paranoia and isolation.
-
Connections:
- The Material Plane: Accessible via “War-Gates” (battlefields where the veil is thin, or ancient ruins of great conflicts).
- The Parched: A neighboring Deficit Plane. The border is a wasteland where predators from both planes compete for scarce resources.
- The Crucible: The Harmonic of Energy. The Scourge is a physical manifestation of the Crucible’s violent potential. Portals here can unleash uncontrollable fire or energy surges.
Role in the Cosmology
The Scourge serves as the engine of evolution and change.
- It represents the brutal truth that progress often comes at a cost. Without the pressure of predation, life would stagnate.
- It is a counterbalance to the Gilded Cage (Order/Stagnation). Where the Cage preserves, the Scourge destroys and rebuilds.
- The Primes (specifically Ignis Prime and Zephyr Prime) view it as a necessary crucible that tests the strength of life, ensuring that only the worthy survive.
Travel Notes for Mortals
- Preparation: Bring the best armor and weapons available. Learn combat skills. Do not trust anyone.
- Magic Warning: Defensive magic is essential. Offensive magic can attract unwanted attention. Healing magic is risky as it may draw predators.
- Survival Strategy: Stay mobile. Do not settle in one place for long. Form temporary alliances but be ready to betray or be betrayed. Keep your weapon drawn at all times.
- Goal: Most travelers come to the Scourge to test their skills, retrieve powerful artifacts from ancient battlefields, or seek glory. Few return without scars, and fewer still without a change in their Pattern.
